Dear Mayor Mamdani and Ms. Goode-Trufant:
The Mayor recently confirmed that he would support Speaker Julie Menin’s proposal for a 100-foot protective buffer around entrances to places of worship if such a proposal was within the bounds of the law. Recent events have shown why the proposed legislation is necessary to protect the rights of all New Yorkers to the free exercise of religion, and we write to you on behalf of the National Jewish Advocacy Center and the National Council of Young Israel to advise you of our view that the proposal is squarely within well-accepted jurisprudence; in line with controlling Supreme Court precedent; consistent with First Amendment doctrine governing content-neutral time, place, and manner regulations; narrowly tailored to significant governmental interests; and viewpoint neutral...
