Mamdani’s Fantasy of Arresting Netanyahu Would Have Turned His Own Cops into Felons

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani told the New York Times that he is in “an active conversation” with the city’s lawyers about whether he can order the New York Police Department to seize Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the United Nations General Assembly in September.
As a candidate, he promised to have Netanyahu apprehended at the airport. As mayor, he now says, “Whatever the law allows me to do in New York City, that’s what we will do, but we won’t be writing our own laws to that end.”
He has since abandoned the idea of arresting Netanyahu, and rightly so. Because the law allows him nothing. Four independent bodies of law forbid such an arrest, and a fifth makes attempting it a federal felony...
