Press Release: Emergency Lawsuit Filed to Block Surfside Mayoral Runoff Election Scheduled During Passover

Miami, FL — The National Jewish Advocacy Center (NJAC) and GS2 Law PLLC today filed an emergency lawsuit in the Circuit Court of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit in and for Miami-Dade County, Florida, on behalf of Chabad of Surfside, Rabbi Zalman Lipskar, United Orthodox Synagogues of Surfside, and six individual registered voters of the Town of Surfside, seeking a temporary injunction to postpone the Town’s mayoral runoff election from April 7, 2026, to April 14, 2026, because the current date falls during the Passover holiday.
The Town of Surfside held its general municipal election on March 17, 2026. Because no candidate received more than 50% of the vote, a runoff election between the top two candidates, former Mayor Shlomo Danzinger and Vice Mayor Tina Paul, was scheduled for April 7, 2026. That date falls squarely during Passover (Pesach), which runs from sundown on April 1 through nightfall on April 9, 2026. Specifically, April 7 is the last day of the intermediate days of Passover (Chol Hamoed) and the eve of the Seventh Day of Passover, a full holy day on which observant Jews are prohibited from performing ordinary work, including driving and engaging in secular activities...
